While you can be assured that Priority Moving is a fully licensed (CAL P.U.C. T-189943) & insured San Diego moving company with the highest BBB rating available, it is always a good idea to check with government and moving industry organizations before hiring a mover.

The industry website, eMovingStorage, has some great information on moving regulations in the state of California:

California’s Public Utilities Commission, www.cpuc.ca.gov, regulates California intrastate household moving. The mover must have a CAL-T # (with this, you can verify if a local mover is licensed and insured). Moving companies adopt the same tariff (Tariff maximum 4, which they can charge an hourly rate up to the tariff the commission has adopted).

In California, a local move is any move within the state that is less than 100 miles and the move would be priced on an hourly basis. An intrastate (long distance move) is over 100 miles in the state of California and is priced by weight and distance.

One important thing to remember is to make sure your local mover carries workers compensation and the proper licensing on equipment and vehicles.

The two best resources for guarding against fraudulent moving companies are the California Public Utilities Commission and the CMSA.

The National Council of Moving Associations (NCMA) has elected CMSA President Steve Weitekamp as a director.

NCMA has been meeting since 1968. Members are comprised of bona fide associations representing movers: state associations, AMSA, International Association of Movers, Canadian Association of Movers, and van line agents associations. The Council’s mandate is to work together to improve the moving and storage industry, including educating consumers and our member companies. The Council meets formally once per year, communicates regularly by e-mail and conducts informal meetings at national events. CE2MPSYVN945

About the CMSA – California Moving and Storage Association:

Comprised of 12 Chapters strategically located throughout California, the CMSA is highly organized and provides effective leadership for the California moving industry. The CMSA also has effective committees focusing on topics such as Government Affairs, Insurance, and Military Affairs. These Committees provide the membership with valuable information and provide a voice for the membership.

As a condition of CMSA membership, each mover member must be licensed and agrees to abide by a Code of Ethics promising to provide California moving consumers honest, legal, and efficient service. Trained personnel, operating clean and safe equipment, are standard CMSA member service characteristics.

The CMSA also includes more than 140 associate member companies. These organizations provide California movers the very best in goods and services to assist in generating a quality service to the California moving public.

The CMSA also plays a valuable role for the California consumer. Through the establishment of membership criteria, consumers who choose a mover that is a member of the CMSA, are more likely to obtain a qualified mover that will provide excellent service.
